Mary A. Valerio was appointed to the Monroe County Legislature in January of 2004 and has been re-elected twice. Legislator Valerio represents the 3rd Legislative District, which includes most of the Town of Chili.

Mary serves as Chair of the Recreation and Education Committee, which oversees the Monroe County Parks Department, the Monroe County Library System, andMonroe Community College, as well as the arts and conservation programs sponsored by Monroe County. She also serves as a member of the Intergovernmental Relations Committee, as legislative liaison to the Monroe County Parks Advisory Committee as well as the liaison to the Monroe County Environmental Management Council.

In addition to her legislative duties, Mary is employed as a Spanish teacher atTwelve Corners Middle School in Brighton. She completed her B.A. in Spanish (which includes a year of study in Madrid, Spain), as well as graduate studies for Professional Certification in Spanish K-12 at SUNY Brockport. She is a member of the Brighton Teachers’ Association (NYSUT/BTA) and NYSAFLT (NYS Association of Foreign Language Teachers). In addition, she has served on several district and school based committees.

A lifelong resident of Chili, Mary has participated in numerous volunteer activities in her community. She is a member of the Breast Cancer Coalition and Parish Life Committee at St. Pius X Church, which she chaired for ten years. She has also taught various religious education classes and has assisted with the annual Vacation Bible School Program. Mary served on the Board of Directors of the Roberts Wesleyan Community College Orchestra and also is as a member of the Italian Women’s Civic Club of Rochester.

Over the years, Mary has assisted in fundraising for the Gates Chili Middle School and High School Theater Groups, Boy Scout Troop #116 and GC Sports Boosters. At the 2003 Gates Chili High School Fall Varsity banquet Mary was presented with the “Role Model Award 2003” in recognition of her volunteerism and courageous battle against breast cancer. In the past, Mary has also served several years as member of the board of directors of the Rochester Area Pre-School and as Secretary of Chili Baseball. In addition, she worked as Volunteer Coordinator and guest art presenter for the Florence Brasser Elementary School Art Appreciation Program and as a member of St. Mary’s Hospital Seton Group 87.

Mary and her husband James live at 43 DaVinci Drive in Chili, and are proud parents of their four sons: James, Marc, Matthew and Samuel.
